A trigger point therapist can help release stubborn muscular knots
Trigger points are specific spots in muscle tissue that can feel like a knot in the muscle fibres. They are usually very tender and sensitive to touch and are usually accompanied by recognised pain referral patterns. They can manifest for several reasons like injury, stress, illness, nutritional deficiencies, changes in activity and sustained poor postures, and if left untreated they can multiply or spread to surrounding muscle tissue and/or give rise to reasonable movement restriction.
Usually the release of trigger points would be performed during either a Deep Tissue or Sports Technique massage as they are found or identified, but it can also be the focus of your treatment. Depending on the severity and/or number of trigger points identified during your massage, they may not all be able to be released or resolved at 1 appointment.
Trigger Points can be released through compressive pressure (usually with a thumb or elbow), or with the use of a fine filament needle (much like the ones used with acupuncture). For many clients being needled can be a quicker and less painful method of releasing Trigger Points, in comparison to the compressive pressure technique usually associated with remedial massage. Of course – just like after getting a massage, we still recommend drinking plenty of water and having a warm soak in an Epsom salts bath.
The focus of Trigger Point Release (either by compressive pressure or Myofascial Dry Needling) is to:
- Reduce pain
- Release myofascial trigger points
- Assist with rehabilitation
- Restore movement
Our philosophy
We are a community focussed business, with a strong belief that combination and variety is the best approach to optimal health care. While it is great to have a primary therapy (or a therapist) you can turn to for most of your health concerns, we believe that no one therapy can provide everything you need, that it is prudent to create a network of therapy to cover all your bases. It is my personal belief that Remedial Massage is a great Primary Therapy, and the benefits from massage can be well supported (and even enhanced) by looking after your body functionally and nutritionally as well.
