Hi, I’m Kate and I absolutely LOVE being a therapist. After years of trying different industries, I finally found something that just fits. As I say to my clients, it never feels like ‘work’ to me.
Why did I become a therapist? Well, initially I really wanted to work for myself, and had a passion for learning about the human body. In a previous life I had studied a Bachelor of Science majoring in Psychology, and for me I knew I wanted to work closely with people.
At the time I was really looking for a change, having been a public servant for 6 years. When an opportunity to leave and escape from under the desk arose, I seized it with both hands (hahaha get it?!)
To start with I really had no idea what to expect, and boy was I pleasantly surprised when I started studying!
I started work in a day spa, and I treated so many different body types. This allowed me to build up some stamina, but more importantly really highlighted that my interest lay in helping people feel better in their bodies. I wanted to know more about what I could do to help them help themselves!
After working for myself and building a clinic for a few years, I was approached by my old college to become a trainer. Here I found where my passion lay, in education. I have been a part-time trainer since 2014 and am really passionate about developing the massage industry through producing high-quality therapists!
So now I incorporate the skills I developed as a trainer in treatments and have found client education to be just as important as the treatment itself. Clients come to see me because I take time to explain why I’m treating a certain area and what to expect post treatment. I love the ‘light-bulb’ moment that happens when a client realises, they can do things to help the longevity of treatment outcomes, and really connect with what is happening to their bodies.
I find trigger-point and myofascial releases to work quite well, alongside some mindful breathing and client awareness of their pain experience. Everyone’s pain tolerances/thresholds are unique, so I use this to my advantage to ensure I work with the brain, rather than against it!
I also really love using and trusting my palpation skills and assessment tools to confirm what I see in a client’s posture or movement pattern. It’s amazing to know when I’ve hit the right area and clients acknowledge this too.
I really love learning and continuing to build my ‘tool kit’ as a therapist. I am a qualified Paediatric Massage Consultant and really love working with parents and their bubs to help with sleep, colic, wind, constipation and most importantly strengthen the bond between them! Nothing is as important as the power of touch.
Having a 3½ year old daughter, I am acutely aware of how much pregnancy changes the body. I intend to really expand on my knowledge base and offer treatments catered especially for pregnancy, as well as the gradual restoration of the post-pregnant body. Coupling this with my infant massage skills will enable me to really cater to young, growing families!
